First, Some glimpses and detailed views of my process ….
Each artwork you see here is unusual - unique - in that it is crafted through the meticulous manipulation of the fibres of simple cheesecloth, sometimes being stitched to painted fabric, resulting in intricate texture and compelling imagery.
Walking with Jane 30 x 24 in. $950 A tribute to the work of Jane Jacobs, author and activist, famous for revolutionizing how people think about cities, urban planning, and community life.
Emily 34 x 20 in. Sold There are few photos of Emily Carr, but this one from 1934 by John Vanderpant shows her with paintbrush in hand, holding a canvas. I sculpted her image in hand-dyed cheesecloth and painted background fabrics using her signature forest palette, in swirls reminiscent of her daring brushstrokes, to give her the setting she was most at home in.
Resilience 24 x 18 in. $650 CAD
Peggy 24 x 40 in. $1200 CAD Undoubtedly Canada’s best-known author, poet, activist, and feminist icon, Margaret Atwood, fondly known as Peggy. Colour features prominently in her recent books. In her 1985 novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, a frighteningly prescient story about a near-future America ruled by a totalitarian regime, she selected for the handmaids’ robes a deep red because of its prominence in medieval paintings, reminiscent of the cross, anger, and blood; now these red robes have become a symbol of oppression, regularly worn by groups protesting the erosion of women’s rights. In her 2019 follow-up novel, The Testaments, Atwood chose spring green for the robes of the teenage brides-to-be, a hue she has suggested evokes hope. It is also a colour of the eco-movement, and she speaks out regularly about the threat of climate change, promoting conservation efforts.
A World of Difference 48 x 35 in. $1800 CAD Sir David Attenborough, English broadcaster, author and historian, whose documentaries have always celebrated the natural world, has pivoted to a grim prediction for the future should humanity continue on its current path. Outlining the devastation he has witnessed in his years observing what is happening to the earth, he decries the willful and thoughtless activities that are destroying the environment and makes a plea for change.
Willie 45 x 34 in. $1200 CAD This portrait celebrates the artistry of musician Willie Nelson. Allusions to lyrics of his most recognized songs permeate the very fabric of his shirt and the smoky background cheekily references his personal crusade to legalize cannabis.
Aubrey 28 x 14 in. $300 Aubrey Beardsley (1872–1898) was a groundbreaking English illustrator and author, renowned as a leading figure of the 1890s Aesthetic movement and Art Nouveau. Famous for his shocking black-and-white ink drawings featuring morbid, erotic, and grotesque themes, he satirized Victorian morality. Despite dying of tuberculosis at 25, his prolific, controversial, and highly stylized work profoundly influenced modern art and design.
